Formal Letter of Introduction

Hi, My name is Jahan Amrin, I am writing to introduce myself about my culture, background, education and interests in Latin American culture and history. Starting with my educational history, the birthplace of many of my current interests, I attended many different elementary schools because of the amount of times my family moved to a different location in Queens. At that point of my life I was really young and had no clue what I wanted ahead in life. I wasn’t sure what subject I was good at because pretty much everything seemed hard to me up until 5th grade, I finally learned what subject I was strong in and that was surprisingly: math (yes I had a hard time believing I was good with numbers too). Furthermore I graduated and attended Junior High School and throughout the years of Junior High School I became more and more passionate about math, and soon enough I found myself lost in the world of mathematics by High School I was so driven by my understanding of math that I began tutoring kids my age in Algebra 1,2 and SAT Math. I started to learn that I actually enjoyed teaching and tutoring people in math. I would get bombarded with compliments from my math teachers who were very thrilled to see my drive and magnetic energy towards such a complicated subject to many.  Being showered with all these compliments caused me to think how would it actually be if I studied to become a teacher, surely I knew I cannot deal with kids and how much they abuse their teachers. It was clear becoming a teacher wasn’t something I favored. When I thought deeply about my future I can see myself doing technology related work something that deals with computers, programming and coding, and I knew exactly what field of study my expectations falls in, which is none other than computer science. Now regarding my background there isn’t much to say… I was born here, raised in Queens, New York, my family comes from another side of the world which is Bangladesh, my parents came to this country around 1998 looking for a better future, two years later I was born, they worked hard to raise me and get me where I am right now. Anyways, now that I am in college and I want to pursue a career in the computer science in ofcourse the City College of New York, I needed to first be able to get into Grove School of Engineering. To do that I needed to seek for more information and guidance, so I met with my academic advisor which she then explained all the required courses and standard that I need to meet before applying to Grove School. One of the required course was FIQWS, which now I can reveal on why I chose to take this specific course subjected on the Latin American History and Culture. Well first, I really enjoy history and the meaningful events that have occured in the past and how our world is so advanced and developed now. I still do think that history can be boring at times but I don’t mind it at all. But for the specific reason on choosing Latin American History is because I was immensely interested in spanish culture in High School and knowing that Latin America focuses on spanish speaking countries I decided why not go into depth about learning about Latin America’s significant historical events and traditional values/morals they follow. So now that I have been admitted to this class, I have a lot of goals that I want to accomplish by the end of this semester. One specific goal is to improve my reading and writing skills. I want to be able to interpret Latin American passages and historical readings so I can write about specific events that happened in the past that may be seen as an important era to the Latin Americans. I don’t really enjoy reading or writing but I want to be able to make literacy a habit for me because for college reading and writing is going to be a really important factor for me. Now talking about the type of person I am, well I am a person who values their own morals and beliefs and who has high ambitions as a student by the motivation and dedication I have to accomplish my work. The type of person I am as a writer I believe, is that I am pretty straightforward to get my point across, however at times I don’t feel like I am able to express my idea creatively based on how I imagined on writing it, which is why I am looking forward into improving my writing skills throughout this course.
